Summer Staff: Each summer, Gasper River employs young adults to work the full summer as Staff/Counselors. You must be at least one year removed from high school and a strong, practicing Christian to be eligible for this position. The primary duties of a Summer Staff member will be to facilitate summer camp activities and to mentor the youth. Staff Counselor’s primary duties will be to stay in the cabins with the youth, to oversee the other counselors and act as a liaison between the staff and volunteer counselors.
Staff In Training (SIT): Each week, Gasper River will employ 3-4 Staff-In-Training. You must at least be entering your junior year of high school and a strong, practicing Christian to be eligible for this position. The primary duties of an SIT will be kitchen duties, serving meals and doing maintenance.
**NOTE: Those wishing to apply for a Summer Staff or Staff in Training Position must fill out an application. Applications are available online and are due by NO LATER THAN FEB 28. All Summer Staff applicants must attend an interview weekend on either March 4 @ 7:30-March 6 @ 11:30 AM or April 1 @ 7:30-April 3 @ 11:30 . Summer Staff are required to attend weekend in order to be eligible for hire; SIT do not attend the interview weekend. Volunteer Counselor (VC): At each week of camp, we will need 4-6 volunteer counselors of each gender to stay in the cabins with the youth. VC’s must be at least 16 years of age (no exceptions) and strong practicing Christians to be eligible to help. Those wishing to help with high school camps must be at least one year removed from high school. Primary responsibilities of VC’s are to supervise campers, help them to arrive at activities on time and to work with the staff to provide a great experience for the youth. Space is limited for VC’s. Those interested will be required to attend a Counselor Training Day. If you are interested in a week of camp, but it has already reached it’s maximum capacity for counselors, your name will be put on a waiting list and you will be informed if an opening occurs.
Health Care Provider (HCP): Each week of camp will have one HCP on site who is qualified to administer first aid, dispense prescribed medicines, and assume responsibility for emergency situations, maintain health records and recommended procedures for proper sanitation in camp. This person must be a licensed physician, a Registered Nurse, a Licensed Practical Nurse, a paramedic, an EMT, or a heath care student certified in first aid and CPR (minimum requirements). HCP's are given one full scholarship that must be used in the same camp season by a close family relative. Amount of scholarship is equal to the week of camp volunteered for.
**NOTE: All Volunteer Counselors over 18 years of age and Health Care Providers must have completed a Background Check and the Safe Environment Course provided by the Diocese PRIOR to attending Camp. Background Checks can take several weeks to clear, so please fill out and return the paperwork to Molly Thompson at the McRaith Catholic Center as soon as possible.
